Handbrake cable fouling propshaft

On my Mark 1 the horseshoe-shaped thing dividing the handbrake cable to the loop going to each rear wheel is only about 1/4 inch from the propshaft. Consequently if I adjust the handbrake as per the book, the horseshoe can bounce up and touch the shaft when going over a bump, making a clang. This doesn't really matter apart from being noisy and iritating, but is this normal? It seems to me that the bracket holding the cable is too insubstantial, and may have bent with time letting the cable run too close to the propshaft. Is this a common problem? Is there a standard fix for it, like a heavy duty bracket conversion? I hesitate just to bend the bracket in case it breaks.
