Peter,
I too have heard that silicone should not be put on vehicle surfaces. The instructions with RainX state clearly that you are to be extra careful not to let any of the liquid touch the rubber or paintwork. Application is very easy however as you just squirt some on the spreader that comes with the product or even onto a cloth. You never pour directly on the window. It is a clean and easy process. The RainX must have acetone in it to make it dry quickly which helps to eliminate the chance of run-off. I have never damaged any of my cars with this product. As for the smearing, I can only say that I have never experienced it in the nearly twenty years I have used RainX. I wish I could give you a more clear answer but I am only a biologist and not an organic chemist! I am sure you will not be dissapointed if you try one of these products. Good Luck! Mary
