I was wondering too about the good/bad silicon thing! I guess it's just that; one formulation smears on glass, another doesn't. Residual silicon is the quickest way to mess up a paint job; the new paint reacts badly.

RainX has some petroleum product in it, but the label doesn't specify what. I've found it's great in heavy rain when you really don't need the wipers, but in the typical English drizzle it's not so good. The water's not arriving in sufficient quantity to make big drops and run off, it more stays as a layer of small drops. Then you need to use the wipers, which seems to take the RainX off pretty quick.
