PI - next question please!

To be less trite; it depends on what you want. A well set up PI is a joy to drive (especially in Mk1 form but I'm biased). Having said that they do have many well documented idiosyncrasies. Once you know how it works, the PI system is easy to maintain. A copy of the Register service notes is a must.

However if you want something asthmatic and a bit soft - get an S. It's pretty much common knowledge that the S was a typical end of run machine with all the extras thrown in. They also seem to rust badly compared to the pre facelift cars. then again they only have a pair of carbs to worry about.

The condition of the bodywork is far more important. You can always convert an S into a PI or vice versa if you want. (That's bound to upset some people!)

Regards

Alex
