Having spent the earth trying to achieve 200 bhp and ending up with 160bhp at the wheels which equates to about 190-195 bhp max at the engine. I have come to the conclusion that most people who claim much over 200bhp from non-full race 2.5 engine are sadly mistaken. That said the torque from a high compression tuned 2.5 is something to savour. (mine runs 11:1) Fuel is an issue and mine just copes with BP 98 octane which I believe is the equivalent to Shell Optimax. It prefers Avgas in competition where continued flat out running in the aussie heat can be a bit worrying otherwise. Also the driveline is a very underrated bit of kit with the right mods. I have had no gearbox problems using a modified J Type box. The main West aussie mod is to replace the layshaft bearings with indestructible bronze bushings which spread the load and don't wear out. Propshaft UJ's are replaced with Stag/TR6 items (lengthening a TR6 or Stag propshaft is easiest).. no more UJ issues. The original Pi UJ's are the same size as a Standard 10... nuff said. The diff I use was a NOS 3.7 CWP with quaife LSD centre. Indestructibe over 6 years of standing starts and racing. I believe the planetary gears are the real weakpoint and the LSD deletes them. Nissan driveshafts for that lovely smooth corner exit... OK now I'm rambling...
